QNAP's Hybrid Backup Sync (HBS 3) is the built-in backup, restore and sync centre on QTS — and it speaks S3 natively, which means your QNAP NAS can keep a versioned, deduplicated off-site copy of its data on Z1 Storage. Prerequisites

  • A QNAP NAS running QTS/QuTS hero with HBS 3 Hybrid Backup Sync installed from the App Center
  • A Z1 Storage account with a dedicated bucket, plus your access key and secret key

Step 1: Add Z1 Storage as a storage space

  1. Open HBS 3 and go to Storage Spaces.
  2. Click Create and choose S3 Compatible from the cloud service list.
  3. Enter the connection details:
    • Name: Z1 Storage
    • Server address: s3.z1storage.com
    • Signature version: v4
    • Access key and Secret key: your Z1 Storage keys
  4. Test the connection and save.

Step 2: Create the backup job

  1. Go to Backup & Restore → New backup job.
  2. Select the folders on your NAS to protect.
  3. Choose the Z1 Storage storage space you created, then pick your bucket and set a folder for this NAS.
  4. Set the schedule — daily backups are a good default; add a weekly integrity check if offered.
  5. In the job properties, enable:
    • Client-side encryption — encrypts data before it leaves the NAS; store the password safely, it cannot be recovered.
    • Versioning — keep multiple restore points with smart rotation so you can recover files as they were days or weeks ago.
    • QuDedup (if available) — deduplicates data before upload, cutting both transfer time and stored volume.
  6. Run the job. The first backup uploads everything; later runs transfer only changes.

Step 3: Test a restore

Use the Restore wizard in HBS 3 to pull back a test folder from Z1 Storage. Do this once after setup and periodically after — verified restores are the whole point of backups.
